Look for these hats around town!

Caleb Durward grew up in Washburn and currently resides in Ashland with his amazing girlfriend Renee, her two year old daughter Haylee, two three-foot ball pythons, three slightly obese leopard geckos, two dogs, and one old cat. All things considered, the two year old makes more of a mess than the rest combined.

Caleb spends his time working towards an English/Writing degree at Northland, playing an occasional game of chess, and working to make his friends' and family's lives interesting. His loved ones’ general consensus is that despite Caleb’s somewhat goat-like appearance, he can almost be a good person, sometimes. Caleb is excited about sustainability and looks forward to getting more involved with his community this summer.

Carly is currently a senior at Northland College, studying Water Science and Geoscience. She grew up in Chaska, MN, but dearly enjoys the Chequamegon Bay area and is excited to spend her second summer up in the region. This is her first summer working with Campaign Sustain and the Alliance for Sustainability. Although a little nervous about knocking on strangers’ doors, she is looking forward to meeting new people and learning about their unique experiences and stories regarding sustainability. She is a firm believer on how small daily actions can add up to make a huge impact toward the conservation of the Earth. She hopes to learn new ideas and share some of her own with others. In her spare time she enjoys playing many instruments, biking around town, and swimming in Lake Superior, particularly when it's frozen.

Erin has loved calling Ashland home for three years, and before that she lived in Tennessee and then Missouri where her family has a small farm. Erin has been a DJ at WRNC for almost three years now, and she just recently became a birth doula to assist women as part of the all-volunteer Bami Ondaaziike project. Erin loves to bike, and she can’t wait until it’s harvest time for the garden that she planted with her friends. When asked why she is a part of Campaign Sustain, she replied, “It’s because we get to wear these big funny hats. No, just kidding. I love talking to new people and hearing how their lives are affected by and affect the world we live in.” She also recently traveled to eastern Kentucky where she got to see and learn about the many mountains that have been completely destroyed to mine coal for our energy use here. She would love to see our dependence on resources like coal completely come to an end, so that people in places like Appalachia don’t have to see their land and homes ruined.

Miguel Alvelo comes all the way up from Puerto Rico to the Chequamegon Bay Area to learn about sustainability and live in the beautiful Northwood. He is currently studying in Northland College, and enjoys playing guitar, photography, writing, running, and biking around town. He also co-hosts the Northwood’s first Spanish-speaking radio show on WRNC: JAM en Español. Last January, Miguel spearheaded the Dark-Sky initiative for Northland College, which is currently being reviewed by the master planning committee to be included in Northland policy –making Northland the first Dark-Sky compliant campus ever. He recently initiated himself in home gardening and is really excited about learning more from all the new people he’ll be meeting this summer –spreading the word about sustainable living.
